GI conditions in children with special needs
Almost 80% of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders, ADHD and cerebral palsy have underlying gut issues including lazy gut, leaky gut and altered gut microbiome. These interfere with their behaviors and ability to cope with their physical therapy and occupational therapy, which are critical to maximize their potential. It takes special expertise to approach their ongoing GI issues and treat them. Often, significant improvement is seen in their behaviours once their gut health is restored.
Recognizing GI Symptoms in Nonverbal Children:
Children who are nonverbal may have difficulty expressing discomfort. Look for these signs of GI distress:
- Behavioral changes like irritability or aggression.
- Refusal to eat or drink.
- Frequent arching of the back or clenching of fists (a sign of pain).
- Changes in bowel habits, such as diarrhea or constipation.
- Unexplained weight loss or slow growth.
Supporting Gut Health in Children with Special Needs:
Optimizing gut health can enhance your child’s overall well-being. Encourage a balanced diet, regular hydration, and consistent routines. Addressing GI conditions promptly not only alleviates discomfort but also helps improve energy levels, mood, and daily functioning.
