Healthy Gut and Poor Gut Health

A healthy gut refers to a balanced and diverse microbiome, efficient digestion and absorption of nutrients, and an intact intestinal barrier that prevents harmful substances from entering the bloodstream. Key indicators of a healthy gut include regular bowel movements, minimal gastrointestinal discomfort, and good overall energy levels.

Poor gut health can arise from various factors, including a diet high in processed foods and low in fiber, frequent antibiotic use, chronic stress, inadequate hydration, and certain medical conditions like infections or autoimmune diseases. Disruption of the gut microbiome, known as dysbiosis, is a common contributor to poor gut health.
Symptoms of poor gut health in children include abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, food intolerances, and fatigue. These symptoms can be vague and often, most blood tests and stool tests yield normal results. Long-term gut health issues can impact weight gain and height velocity by impairing nutrient absorption and increasing inflammation. For example, conditions like chronic diarrhea or malabsorption syndromes can lead to deficiencies in essential nutrients such as iron, calcium, and vitamins, which are crucial for growth and development. Addressing gut health requires a multifaceted approach, including dietary changes to promote a diverse microbiome, stress management, and treatment of underlying conditions.
